RECENT UNC CHARLOTTE GRADUATE AND FORMER INTERN JOINS BRAVE STEP’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS

On Tuesday, Brave Step’s Board of Directors announced the addition of Casey Denbow, a former intern and recent University of North Carolina at Charlotte graduate, to the nonprofit’s leadership team.

Drawn to Brave Step’s mission of empowering individuals impacted by sexual violence, Denbow started as a clinical intern in June 2021. As a psychology student, she worked closely with Brave Step’s program manager to support bi-monthly peer support groups and offer case management; planned new programs; established a trauma-informed library for survivors; coordinated two survivor outreach events with her sorority, Chi Omega; and more.

“As a clinical intern, Casey demonstrated drive, maturity and compassion that exceeded the expectations of the role,” said Yenting Liu, Brave Step’s program manager. “With her leadership and support, we were able to implement new initiatives and expand our services for our survivors and community. She consistently proved to be an invaluable member of the team and of the Brave Step family.”

As a passionate advocate who aspires for a career that focuses on survivor care, the honors graduate is currently training as a Guardian ad Litem volunteer in Wake County. She has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Her community involvement includes volunteering through the University Honors Program, Chi Omega, and College Mentors for Kids.

“Casey is a thrilling addition for so many reasons: Her demonstrated passion and drive to support our mission are inspiring and more than enough to justify her inclusion on this board,” said Board President Caleb Holloway. “Casey is also helping us make history here, as Brave Step’s youngest ever and first Asian-American board member. We’re honored to welcome her fresh perspectives as we seek to serve a widely diverse community.”

Denbow joins an active board of directors focused on shaping a strong, supportive community. The Charlotte-based nonprofit provides personalized services that help adults impacted by sexual violence reclaim the life they deserve; fosters brave public conversations about sexual violence; and cultivates courageous changemakers.
