Throughout April: Brave Step Virtual Walk/Run
This April, step into action with Brave Step during our annual Color It Blue Virtual Walk/Run, a powerful part of our Color It Blue “Move”ment. Let’s come together to show courage, solidarity and unwavering support for survivors and loved ones during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.
April 4: Rooted in Resilience: Grounding Techniques for Everyday Strength
This survivor-focused session introduces practical grounding techniques to help survivors manage stress and anxiety. Participants will explore grounding skills rooted in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to anchor themselves in the present moment. The workshop will also address how panic attacks affect both the brain and body, providing strategies to recognize and manage these responses. Additionally, skill-based approaches will be covered, including coping techniques for hypervigilance, improving sleep, and managing flashbacks.
April 8 at 5 p.m.: Join Roper Physical Therapy for the Brave Step Virtual Walk/Run
On April 8 at 5 p.m. at Roper Physical Therapy (301 E. Tremont St., Suite B in Charlotte), leaders from Roper Physical Therapy will step into action for our Virtual Walk/Run. Join them to show courage, solidarity and unwavering support for survivors and loved ones.
April 11: Reclaiming Intimacy: Navigating Sexuality After Trauma
This workshop offers a safe, supportive space for survivors to explore their relationship with sex and intimacy post-trauma. Participants will learn about the impact of sexual trauma on the body and mind, including how it affects desire, boundaries, and trust. Attendees will learn to understand their personal needs, and explore what healthy, consensual intimacy can look like on their own terms. The focus is on empowerment, self-awareness, and fostering growth in reclaiming one’s sexual agency.
April 25 : Breaking the Cycle: Understanding Substance Use and Reconnecting with Your Body
This session explores the complex relationship between sexual trauma and substance use, offering a compassionate space to understand how substances impact the body and mind. Participants will learn about the physiological effects of addiction, how trauma can influence coping mechanisms, and ways to reconnect with their bodies through grounding techniques. The workshop emphasizes self-compassion and provides tools for nurturing healthier coping strategies, supporting both recovery and personal growth.

Sexual violence is not vague abuse but an act of violence. It leaves behind a life-altering mental, physical, social, financial and spiritual impact, and it cripples individuals as well as the family and community.
- The scale of sexual violence is staggering with more than 50 percent of women and 25 percent of men in the United States experiencing sexual violence in their lifetime (United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)).
- 91% of child sexual abuse perpetrators are individuals known by the child victim or their family members. (1)
- The total lifetime economic burden of child sexual abuse in the United States in 2015 was estimated to be at least $9.3 billion. (1)
- Every 68 seconds someone is sexually assaulted in the United States. Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. (2)
- A majority of child survivors are 12-17 (3).
- 100% of us are impacted by sexual violence.
